People In Music History
MacDowell, Edward [Alexander] (1860-1908) American composer, also pianist.
Trained in France and Germany. Wrote many short piano pieces, somewhat after
Grieg's manner, which once had wide popularity; also 2 piano concertos, Hamlet
and Ophelia and other symphonic poems, songs, etc. The MacDowell Colony, a
peaceful working place for composers and other artists, in New Hampshire, was
organized in his memory.
